Layla Forrest-White

Sonnet for CC

My heart’s a sharp conceit, a limousine
From which I may not ever disembark
Start treacherous muscle, what guillotine
Hovers above? Garçon, can we just park

My heart’s a jaywalker, a magpie finch
Unsanctioned paths, glint of passing flashes,
Cruising unencumbered, might give an inch
In the dry, nested treasure of my cache

My heart’s on Saturn, would that it would load
This tender accident, diced and spliced
No service out here on outerspace road
All worthful endeavors endeavored thrice

Except my life, except my life, except
My life, supernal regret ill-adept

LAZARUS

Hi,

I’m Salome,
& here it is,
yup,
the head
of John the Baptist,

I don’t want it,
it kinda sucks that I even have it,
it’s freaky really, gives me
the heebie
jeebies,

I’m super beautiful,
& I just want to dance beautifully,
A testament to my newness
Did you ever see me dance?

But, look,
you can have it, ok?
Wait, just the head—
the platter’s my mom’s!

You’ve given to me my life,
& I’d like to help you,
do whatever it is you want to do
